VSAN Witness Host – Update Manager Scan Issue

I do not know if you experienced this issue like me but I have been experiencing a Update Manager Scan issue on VSAN Witness host, it can not pass scan step.

VSAN is enabled after one or two month I wanted to check patches if there are any waiting patch for Witness host but no success. I got the following error:

“The host returns esxupdate error codes: -1. Check the Update Manager logs”

Then I googled the issue and applied the following VMware KB, but still same result.

Link: https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/59470

I enabled the SSH service on Witness Host, connected to it via SCP.

I downloaded “esxupdate.log” file which is under /var/log folder, realized the following error while looking inside of the log file. One installed vib package is caused this issue.

“esxupdate: ERROR: ValueError: VIBs ELX_bootbank_elx-esx-libelxima.so_12.0.1108.0-03 and ELX_bootbank_elx-esx-libelxima.so_12.0.1108.0-03

have unequal values of the ‘payloads’ attribute: ‘[elx-esx-libelxi: 1602.936 KB]’ != ‘[elx-esx-libelxi: 1493.833 KB]”

Yes! The issue is adressed. I took a snapshot of Witness appliance before change anything on host.

[root@witnessesxihost:~] esxcli software vib list | grep ELX

    elx-esx-libelxima.so
12.0.1108.0-03 ELX VMwareCertified 2019-03-22

    [root@ witnessesxihost:~] esxcli software vib remove -n elx-esx-libelxima.so

    Removal Result

Message: The update completed successfully, but the system needs to be rebooted for the changes to be effective.

     Reboot Required: true

     VIBs Installed:

     VIBs Removed: ELX_bootbank_elx-esx-libelxima.so_12.0.1108.0-03

     VIBs Skipped:

    [root@ witnessesxihost:~]reboot

Then I connected to Witness ESXi host via Putty, queried the mentioned package, yes there was. I uninstalled it by using above commands.

Next step was “Reboot”, and run Update manager scan task (check compliance), finally happy end! it is solved.

Finally waited patches are installed to host.

After patch Deployment, I ran the health check on VSAN enabled cluster, it was ok. No issue.

Ultimately snaphot removal, done.

My product version is stated below:

vCenter: 6.7 U1

VSAN: 6.7 U1

ESXi 6.7 U1

Good luck for any case!
